Oxygen saturation is one of the important indicators of oxygenation in preterm infants. The term “oxgen desaturation” is used to indicate decrease or deficiency of oxygen saturation. However, there is no consensus of defining oxygen desaturation of premature infants because they have a higher proportion of fetal hemoglobin, less mature, and more sensitive to the environmental stimulation as compared to the adults. This phenomenon may affect communication among health providers and clinical decision. Therefore, this article analyzes the concept of “desaturation in preterm infants” by following procedures suggested by Walker and Avant. By clarifying attributions, consequences, and definitions of “desaturation in preterm infants” and considering the infant’s individuality, nurses and researchers can accurately assess premature infants’ oxygenation and provide effective care. |
