With the change of social trend and widely recognized childbirth knowledge, giving birth is no longer an important event in the life experience just for mothers, but also an important role change process for fathers. It is becoming a social trend for fathers to stay in the delivery room and participate in the process of childbirth. In our department, the proportion of fathers accompanying in the delivery room was found to be 79.47% from January to June of 2006. In September of 2006, we interviewed 32 fathers regarding reasons for not attending the process of giving birth and found that ineffectiveness of nursing instructions was one of the major factors, in addition to concern or fear of the possible unexpected situation during the delivery and lack of mental preparation and motivation to be involved in the birth giving process. This project began by creating nursing instructional information sheets and educational training program relating to childbirth accompanying process. The project instructed fathers strategies to adopt relaxing skills to assist their spouses go through the period before delivery. Three months after implementing the project, the execution rate of fathers providing support to the birth giving during the childbirth accompanying process has increased from 20.4% to 78.6%. It also improves the satisfaction rate of mothers to the fathers for their participation in the childbirth accompanying process, and raised the sense of accomplishment of the nurses for their work. We herein expect the project can improve the cohesion of family members, and therefore accomplishing the mission of making a familyoriented ideal of the obstetrics department. |
