This article described the nursing experience of an adolescent with a right above-knee amputation surgery. The author collected the data from June 14 to July 9, 2005 by using Gorden’s 11 functional health assessment tool and identified problems of pain, body image disturbance, physical mobility impairment, and knowledge deficit. The caring process included reducing patient’s pain by the relaxing skill, providing active sympathy and emotional supports, revealing suppressed emotion, encouraging the subject facing the reality a change of the body, and helping him and family members perform rehabilitation together. In addition, self-care skills such as using assisted device to reduce the dependence and care about amputation after discharge were also provided to assist the patient adjusting for his daily life. The nursing experience provided an useful reference for caring adolescent patients with amputation. |
