A non-healing ulcer of the lower extremity may have many causes, such as diabetes and peripheral arterial disease. An ulcer is an obstructive condition where the flow of blood through peripheral arteries is impeded. Lower extremity ulcers impact the quality of life and increase the health expenses of patients and their caregivers. The purposes of this article were to provide physicians and nurses with an overview of the pathophysiology, risk factors, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and wound management strategy of arterial insufficiency and ulceration. This review article is intended for physicians and nurses with an understanding and interest in managing patients with arterial insufficiency and ulceration. Clinical nurses are encouraged to use proven strategies to prevent and decrease the impact of lower extremity ulcers with arterial insufficiency. |
