This research discussed and assessed the effects of music therapy on improving the negative symptoms and human interactions of chronic psychotic patients. The research applied the experimental research design to compare the effects of music therapy between the experimental group and control group. Thirty-four chronic psychotic patients from a psychiatric hospital were randomly assigned into the experimental group and control group. During the research period, the experimental group was given an one-hour section group music therapy four times a week for five consecutive weeks. The group music therapy included song introduction, music listening, song teaching, group singing, and feeling exchange. The effects were evaluated in the first week and the forth week after the therapy ended. The resulted showed that the music therapy effectively reduced the negative symptoms, such as the isolation periods of the patients, time spending on the bed, and isolation from social interactions. It also increased the frequency of patient's interpersonal interactions and interests in the changes of the surrounding environment. |
