The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore patients' needs and related factors in the observation room of the emergency room department at a medical center in northern Taiwan. A total of 130 patients were recruited in the study using a simple random sampling method. A patient needs questionnaire, a Health Locus Control questionnaire, and demographic questions were used to collect data. Descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA test, and Pearson's Correlation were performed in the data analyses. Results revealed the following. First, getting information related to illness was the main patient need. Second, the question most frequently responded to as important was 'How long do I need to wait for admission?' Three, the variables significantly affecting patient needs were education, marital status, emergency room experiences, transfer from other hospitals, triage level, and disease pattern. Findings suggest nurses need to be aware of patients' needs in the observation room of the emergency department. Establishing standards for conveying medical information and emergency observation room protocols to patients will help meet their needs and allay their anxieties and improve the quality of care. |
