This case study focused on the nursing experience of caring for a 36 year-old woman who had cervical carcinoma and experienced the emotions of shock, denial, anger, depression, and acceptance. Participatory observation was used to collect data which included both verbal responses and non-verbal behaviors. Gordon's functional evaluation of health conditions was used to guide data collection. Results showed three priority problems-anxiety, latent contraction, and changes in sexual behavior. By building a therapeutic relationship with the patient and providing her with information related to her disease and chemotherapy, the patient gained knowledge about psychological and sexual problems associated with cervical cancer. Comprehensive care reduced the patient's anger and negative emotions. She was able to focus on obtaining new knowledge about therapy sessions and actively raise questions during nursing care. Findings suggest that appropriate planning and nursing care can help cervical cancer patients deal with anxiety sooner and receive treatment with less trepidation. |
