'Sacred space' has always been a significant location for enhancing human spirituality. The purpose of this research is to elucidate the relationship between the 'sacred' and the 'profane,' and explore practice and types of sacred space to construct a preliminary conceptual model for designing sacred space. This study proposes a preliminary model and the finding in several dimensions. (1) Sacred space is the 'medium' and 'symbol' to communicate with god or personal spirits. (2) There is a distinction between the 'sacred' and the 'profane.' Three strategies: buffered space, rite, or sanctified activities, could define sacred fields. (3) The field model is usually inspired by the perception of the sacred aura and the visualization to construct the sacred field. The centrality, orientation and sacred focus are the significant characteristics to construct the sacred axis. (4) Designing sacred space should consider from three layers: the heaven, the earth, and the human. (5) Nature (light. water, plants, wind), the significant factors of sacred space, should be implicated as the first layers. (6) The approaches for experiencing sacred space are gradually moving from formalized religious faith to informal, daily, multifaceted personal spiritual experiences. |
