The academic and industrial fields in Japan were scrutinizing the trend of globalization right after the bubble economic blooming in the 1990s. In addition, the rising Asian economics had also forced Japan to rethink its positioning in global perspectives. Under this trend, the Japanese design industry had also been reflecting and looking hard for ways of breaking through this decade-long economic recession. The historical information of design as of today is mainly interpreted by two facets-time and space, and covered backward to the previous century only. Taking the G-MARK awarded works in the last decade as our subject, it not only extended the track of design activities into this century, but also cut across various territories of design to investigate the existed design characteristics at a full spectrum. This study is aimed at analyzing the design characteristics and their structure of the G-MARK Grand Prize winners from 1999 to 2008. Based on the grounded theory, the NVivo 8 software and the concept of dualism were utilized to analyze our data collected from the outlines, designer's comment, and jury comment of those prize-winning design works. Finally 9 facets of design characteristics were found, including visual, interactive, innovative, environmental, integrated, sensational, utilizing, systematic, and cultural facets. It is hoped that the structure of these facets of design characteristics can be taken as reference for exploring the future design trends. |
