Annually, the number of patients undergoing total hip replacement increases. Recently, medical research has successively determined that the application of health navigation programs promoted operative effectiveness. However, there is a lack of systemic review of domestic health navigation programs that aim to improve operative effectiveness. This systematic review probes the effectiveness of health navigation programs for patients undergoing total hip replacement. Keywords, such as "hip replacement", "Health education", "ffectiveness" were included in a research article search. Common databases, such as CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Medline, Cochrane Library of Controlled Trials, CEPS, etc. were used to search for published articles between 1960 and 2012. Two independent researchers participated in this review. The quantitative appraisal instruments, developed by Australian Evidence Center, were used to assess the quality of the research articles. Six studies were reviewed with five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and one quasi-experimental design study. The assessment scores of these studies ranged from 9 to 11. The review outcomes indicated that the experimental group with health navigation had fewer hospital days and better mobility function in three months post-operation than the control group. The study concluded that health navigation programs can reduce the number of hospital days, promote patient mobility, and facilitate better quality of life for patients undergoing total hip replacement. |
