Nursing education emphasizes pragmatic practice. The curriculum design and teaching model of a nursing school education must be congruous with the needs of a clinical nursing practice to cultivate competent, employable, and successful nursing personnel. This article examines the crux and challenges of current nursing education, in terms of developing nurse competency. It also analyzes the impacts of promoting nursing education that corresponds with the nation's policy developments, encourages the reflection and evaluation of current nursing school education, and proposes educational strategies for improving nurse competency. The five proposed strategies are integration of professional certification into the educational system, reduction of the gap between clinical practice and learning in classes, enhancement of capstone courses, competency-based clinical certification, and counseling for coping and career adaptation. From the perspective of employers in the healthcare industry, a nursing curriculum must closely link to a clinical nursing practice. That is, nursing schools should nurture clinical practice nurses to meet the nursing competencies and standards of the healthcare industry. Therefore, their employees can achieve the best care for patients and enhance the value of the nursing profession. |
