Su Shi made friends with Hsu Da-shou through communication of poems and prose. The purpose of this article is to sort out and list events leading to their friendship. In 1080, Su recorded three poems of entertainment he composed while getting along with Hsu. The poems are clearly the embodiment of their care for each other. One year later, Su continued to work on poems about his friendship with Hsu. Many poems written in this period depicted and praised those artists Hsu kept at home. In 1082, Su recovered from the debasing situation he suffered two years ago, and started to write down a large number of lyrics with the theme of praising Hsu Da shou's maids. The frustrations Su suffered when he was exiled to Huangzhou in Hubei Province of southern China had dissipated as he found comfort in Hsu’s company. In 1083, Hsu died while traveling to his new post in another municipality. Hereafter, Su mourned for his short-lived friendship with Hsu in terms of sad and depressing poems. |
