[Phoenix], the auspicious bird in the ancient legends, was repeatedly mentioned by the folks and literati in the poems or stories. The figures of phoenix were gradually evolved through times. Unlike other birds, which had actual appearances, such alleged bird never existed in the real world yet created a vivid figure in all the minds which had profound cultural meanings. The usages of phoenix figure in Yu, Hsin’s poems were changeable and abundant. The turbulent life experiences of Yu, Hsin, the transformation of his poetic styles, the utilizations of allusions, and artistic effects could all be observed and the acceptance and utilization of the phoenix figure during the Wei, Jin, and the Southern and Northern Dynasties were also reflected in the poems. The author investigated the phoenix figure in Yu, Hsin’s poems and expected to identify the usage and perspectives of such figure. |
