This research aims at exploring the elder’s experiences of participating community volunteer services, with special reference of two communities in Kaohsiung County. This research attempts to look into the experience of senior volunteers in community services, the difficulties they encounter in participating in the community services, their experiences of being senior volunteers, and what changes to these senior volunteers in community services. Because these two communities have their own history of development, so this research attempts to investigate how different types of communities influence the senior volunteers serving their community. This research adopts a qualitative methodology, by means of in-depth interview and literature review, in order to obtain the first-hand data of senior volunteers’ experiences and their personal situations. According to the analyzed documents of interviews and relevant reviews, this study indicates the following conclusions. First, different communities with different developing backgrounds and conditions have different influences on the elder volunteer’s participation, which would lead to various experiences and obstacles encountered by these elder volunteers. Second, senior volunteers’ services influence themselves, their families and the whole community. Third, with the elder’s participation in different phases of community service, different theories of voluntary service have to be employed regarding the difference phases in question. Finally, it is with the hope to flourish the elder’s voluntary participation in community service that this study comes to several suggestions for the reference of the elder volunteers, communities, and the government. With these suggestions in mind, the elders will be more vigorous in fulfilling their lives, and, most importantly, our communities as well as society will cherish the elders around us even more. |
