Bodily Cultivation and Namelessness in the Lao Tzu

修身（self－cultivation）問題乃中國文化中古老又重大的議題，而可與現代人類學中的身體研究相激盪，產生嶄新的學術意義。亦即藉助人類學在身體研究上的視野，重新剖析古代典籍對身體豐富的論述，若就Margaret Lock（1993）一文而言，即是將身體置入社會脈絡，注意身體的感知性、符號性、實踐性、主體性及其與社會秩序的關係，從而對中國文化中之身體特性、修身方法與身體觀點有深入的理解。

This article discusses Laozi’s concept of namelessness（wuming無名）and his theory of bodily cultivation. The issue of bodily cultivation in ancient China is an issue of self－cultivation （xiushen修身）and is an important one in Chinese culture. Lzozi proposes the very interesting idea of namelessness as the key to self－culti－vation.
