Manufacturing industry has made great contribution to the economic development of Taiwan in early years. However, related research about industrial history has only aimed at the perspectives of culture and language. Moreover, a great deal of industrial research has focused only on managerial function with a cross-sectional approach rather than a macro with longitudinal approach. Therefore, this study intended to explore the critical incidents of Taiwan umbrella making industry, by using in-depth interviews based on purposive and snowball sampling schemes with a supplement of secondary data. The data analysis involved an integration of primary and secondary data from inductive as well as deductive mechanism, constructing the historical footprints of Taiwan umbrella making industry. The result showed that the period of mid-1980 was the glorious stage of Taiwan umbrella making industry, because of a division-and-cooperation business model in Northern and Southern Taiwan. Influenced by economic transformation, labor cost raise, higher tax rate of custom, prevalence of gambling and fever of stock market. Taiwan umbrella making industry moved to Mainland China, entering into a transformative stage until now ever since mid-1990 due to labor shortage. |
