Theories which purport to explain the relationship between schooling and work, and the production and reproduction of social inequality, have occupied educators for some time. Among the few theorists in this field, Bourdieu's work has attracted considerable interest and has introduced some powerful concepts into social theory. This paper explores his theory of reproduction and especially dialectic logics. The theory of reproduction consists of four major propositions and numerous subpropositions which deal respectively with pedagogic action, pedagogic authority, pedagogic work, and the educational system. Bourdieu's concentration on habitus- a system of embodied dispositions that generate practice in accordance with the structure principles of the social world-as the most siginficant generator of practice. His theoretical model is rooted in the attempt to dialectically transcend the opposition between objectivism and subjectivism which could provide a support base for improved theoretical development in regar to sociology of education. |
