Leisure and Work : The Impact of "Mass Leisure Society

大眾休閒現象是現代工業社會的產物，其理想型態是人人都能夠利用自由時間，接觸更有價值的人類文化，發展自已的人格和能力，並致力於增進家族、朋友與社會之間的接觸，以豐富和充實精神生活，從而通過集體合作的力量以達成美好社會的實現。但隨著大眾休閒時間的大量增加，今日，已十分發達的各種大眾傳播媒介不停地剌激大眾的原始慾望。同時巧妙的現代傳播技術也在大眾的心理深處神不知鬼不覺地製造並培養有利於娛樂產業的各種新慾望。不知不覺地，一般群眾逐漸成為商業性娛樂宣傳的犧牲品。這些商業娛樂多半缺乏傳統的民間娛樂所具的消除身心疲勞、恢復體力的「再創造」(recreation) 的積極面。Erich Fromm認為現代人沒有真正自由以享受他的閒暇。他消磨閒暇的方式，早就為「休閒」產業所決定。這誠是今日休閒生活異化情形的殘酷寫照，也是當前休閒生活的一嚴重危機。在真正休閒時代來臨之前，人類尚有 許多問題需要克服或回答。因此在未來很長的一段時間，特別是在人口眾多、生產技術尚十分落後的第三世界，不太可能有休閒主導的社會出現。比較可能的，也是可欲的形態乃是休閒與工作均衡、並重的社會。人要會工作，也要會善於利用閒暇。最好是，人類同時能在工作與休閒兩領域均能從事創造性活動的機會，都能有自主性與充實的感覺。

Mass leisure phenomenon is the product of modern industrial society. On the alienation problems of both blue and white collar workers today, the compensation theorists anticipate that the pains caused by the dehumanized labor might be relieved by free, active and autonomous leisure time activities. However, the reality of leisure is still very far from it's ideal. The passive and manipulated leisure warned by Erich Fromm is much closer to the truth. Through the sophisticated techniques of modern mass media, the commercialized leisure industries are determining and moulding the leisure time consuming behavior of the mass. As a result, man is alienated both in his lives of leisure and work, and this is one of the greatest challenges we are facing today.
