A second generation and nationwide smoking cessation program has provided comprehensive services for smokers. Community pharmacists have increasingly important roles in helping smokers quit. However, research about their practice and influencing factors regarding offering smoking cessation counseling is lacking. The purposes were to determine the current smoking cessation counseling of community pharmacists in Taiwan and to examine related factors of their practices. A cross-sectional and correlated survey was conducted. A list of community pharmacies making contracts for providing cessation services was provided by the Department of Health in counties and Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare. Two hundred and eight participants were included using a stratified random sampling. The 69-item structured questionnaire included demographic information, setting cessation products, service time, and cessation counseling regarding self-perceived knowledge, attitudes, self-perceived skills, self-efficacy, policy, and counseling practices. Data analyses were conducted using t test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression. Participants receiving cessation counseling training provided more services than those who not receiving (p=.01). A multiple regression model showed that skills ( β= .36, p = .01) and attitudes ( β= .15, p = .01) were important factors associated with pharmacists' cessation counseling. This result suggested that health professionals should develop cessation training courses specific to skills and attitudes of cessation counseling to promote pharmacists' cessation counseling. |
