This study aims to evaluate the status and changes of depression in postpartum women in post-partum nursing center. Using purposive sampling, the total sample size was 50 women in the post-partum nursing center in eastern Taiwan. The Chinese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and semi-structured interviews were utilized to collect the data. The results showed that the difference in mean scores of EPDS-1 (EPDS score at admission day) and EPDS-2 (EPDS score after two week) attained statistical significance (mean 7.36 vs. 5.84; t = 4.42; p < .01). It was found that 28.0% of women fell into the postpartum depression category (EPDS score above 9) at EDPS-1. At EPDS-2, the rate fell to 12.0% with statistical significance ( 2 = 4.42; p = .02). When women lived in a post-partum nursing center, mother and child received professional care, mothers learned parenting skills, and had time and space for adequate rest, which maybe positively affect women's mood changes. The results of this study may provide healthcare workers with the capacity to recognize mental status changes in postpartum women. As such, we suggest that maternal care unit and institutions' services conduct screening for postpartum depression routinely to improve maternal mental health. |
