The purpose of this quantitative study is to develop and validate the questionnaire of quality of life (QOL) of children with epilepsy, since there is no Chinese version of QOL questionnaire for Taiwanese epileptic school-aged children. School-aged children with epilepsy were recruited from pediatric neurological clinics in several medical teaching hospitals. The inclusion criteria included children aged from 7-15 with non-intractable epilepsy, giving epilepsy diagnosis over 3 months and continuing taking epileptic medicines and, having the ability to fill out the questionnaire themselves. All data were encoded into the computer, and used the SPSS 15.0 packaged software for statistical analysis. There were 188 children participating in this study. The QOL questionnaire consists 20 of items that can be divided into five domains in terms of feeling of stigma, family interaction, school learning, impact of the disease, and personal basic needs. The internal consistency analysis by Cronbach's alpha was 0.804 for the total questionnaire and 0.505-0.791 for sub-domains of QOL. A total questionnaire explained 59.58% of the variance. This study approves the questionnaire is fit for evaluating the QOL of school-aged children with non-intractable epilepsy in Taiwan. We suggest using the self-reported scale to early detect epileptic children's QOL in order to provide proper intervention programs to improve their QOL. |
