Nutrient supplements such as lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, vitamin C, E, trace minerals zinc and copper are effective in the prevention of progression of moderate or severe age-related macular degeneration. The dosage used must be carefully monitored. However, nutrient support in normal subject or mild age-related macular degeneration is not evidence-based. Also there is no evidence as to the effect on other eye diseases such as glaucoma, vitreous floated etc. The study in regard to its effect on cataract is undergoing. In fact, daily food adjustment is sufficient to supply the nutrients needed. |
