It is not necessary to accept any ideological position to uncover the meaning of being Taiwanese. Past discussions of 'Taiwan consciousness' were the product of a particular stage in the development of Taiwanese society. In today's global society, the concept needs to be reconstructed. This paper uses Taiwan Milieu as a symbol to reveal Taiwan's real situation and the meaning of being Taiwanese. Competition is a positive force in Taiwanese society but must take place upon a common foundation. The meaning of being Taiwanese cannot be explained in terms of race, provincial origin or ethnicity. In the Taiwan Milieu, we are all Taiwanese; it represents a common foundation that binds all Taiwanese together and a basis for manifesting Taiwanese subjectivity in cross-Strait relations. Most importantly, Taiwan Milieu is a concept Westerners can understand and will not oppose. |
