This study aimed to explore the characteristics of expanding convenience stores in retail industry. Unlike previous studies, the researcher, first based on the concept of economic revenue and costs, discovered the minimum threshold for expansion via mathematical derivation, then constructed the mathematical model for the expansion of convenience stores. The result showed that higher population density would lower the expanding threshold, therefore the opportunity for expansion would be increased; on the other hand, more competitors would lead to higher expanding threshold, thus the opportunity for expansion would be decreased. Based on the information from 1993 to 2013, the researcher conducted an empirical study by aiming at population density, competitiveness, and unemployment rate. The findings were consistent with the model. |
