This study explores hemodialysis patients’ participation in recreational activity and physical activity after hemodialysis treatment as well as the influencing factors involved. The questionnaire survey method was used with 126 hemodialysis patients at a teaching hospital somewhere in northern Taiwan. The findings suggested that the top three recreational activities for hemodialysis patients after hemodialysis were watching television, walking and exercise. Visiting was the least common type of recreation. As for the choice of companions during recreation, 57% were by themselves. For the frequency of recreational activity, 38.5% of patients engaged in recreational activities at least three times a week. For physical activity after hemodialysis, 47.6% of patients did not engage in regular physical activity while 52.4% did. Patients felt that the most important benefit of regular physical activity was improved energy levels. Patients that did not participate in regular physical activity felt that they were ill. The best method for encouraging participation in physical activity was the support of the patient’s family and friends. |
