The revised 35th item of Special Education Law, which was passed in October, 2009, caused many artistically gifted classes in elementary and junior high schools to turn into general art classes and to separate from the system of special education before the 99th school year started. At this crucial moment, this study analyzed the male/female ratio of gifted students at three levels (elementary, junior high, and senior high school) in three areas (general intelligence, academic aptitude, and artistic talent). The data involved in this study are provided by the special education transit net. Spanning 6 school years, the data collection starts in the first semester of the 93rd school year and ends in the second semester of the98th school year. The data of 11 time points during these six school years were selected for analysis. The results of analysis demonstrated that gifted male students were the minority group in Taiwan's whole gifted population. Artistically gifted male students were especially in the dire situation of underrepresentation. After the display of findings, discussion and implications for the education of the gifted were presented. |
