Preventive maintenance has been widely adopted to increase system performance. Most safety relative systems are standby systems whose condition can be known only by inspection or request to function. Surveillance testing is usually adopted to maintain the availability of standby systems. Frequent testing or maintenance may ensure the system availability to reduce the possibility of catastrophe. However, frequent testing and maintenance may result in cost waste and increase in probability of system failure due to imperfect maintenance. This study provides a cost-effective preventive maintenance model which equilibrating the risk resulted from system unavailability and maintenance cost. Moreover, the optimal surveillance test interval for single-unit standby systems is also provided. |
