This keynote speech discusses analytically four aspects of Hu Shih as a thinker in China's Enlightenment: (1) his common-sense liberalism and advocacy of constitutional democracy and their influences and limitations; (2) the bright spot of Hu Shih's liberalism: his debate with Li Dazhao concerning ”problems vs. isms”; (3) the problems of his advocacy of science as a method, which turned out to be a misunderstanding of scientific method and the real nature of science; and (4) the problems of his advocacy of ”wholesale Westernization”. |
