In recent years, same-sex marriage has become an important issue in Taiwan. This study aimed to explore the bases of support for same-sex marriage. First, we reviewed the contexts of same-sex marriage discussions in Taiwan and demonstrated the distribution of people’s preferences between the years 1991 and 2017. Second, we applied an ordered logit model to examine whether social structures, family values, and party identification affect people’s attitude toward same-sex marriage. The research findings indicate that public opinion of same-sex marriage is in a turbulent period, and people support same-sex marriage based not only on demographic factors, but also on pluralistic family values and party identification. This finding confirms that same-sex marriage has formally become a political issue in Taiwan. |
