Purpose: Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) is the third most common inflammatory arthritis. However, it has long been under recognized. In this review, we summarize and update knowledge about the pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, and treatment of CPPD.
Findings: CPPD is a kind of arthritis caused by deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals. It affects up to 4-7% of the adult population and presents as varied phenotypes. Acute and chronic CPP crystal arthritis are two of the most widely recognized forms. Identification of CPP crystals in the synovial fluid or tissue by compensated polarizing light microscopy is the recommended reference standard for diagnosis of CPPD. Other radiographic techniques help the diagnosis. The current treatment is mainly for resolution of acute flares. Disease-modulating treatments are expected.
Conclusion: CPPD should be considered for every patient with arthritis. Further research about treatment for chronic CPP crystal arthritis is required. |
