This study investigates the effects of acupressure on fatigue, sleep quality, and quality of life in hemodialysis patients. This study used a quasi-experimental design with participants recruited from hemodialysis centers in the Tainan area of Taiwan. The patients were randomly divided into an experimental group (35) and a control group (30). The experimental group received standard hemodialysis treatment and 15 minutes of acupressure treatment (at the Yongquan, Tianzhu, Shenmen, and Neiguan pressure points), whereas the control group received only standard hemodialysis treatment. Patient follow-up was conducted for 4 weeks. The tools used in this study included individual case information, a hemodialysis patient fatigue index, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the concise Taiwanese version of the Quality of Life Index. Statistical calculation methods, such as percentages, the chi-squared test, and repeated measures ANOVA were used and analyzed using SPSS18.0 software. The results demonstrated significant differences between the states of fatigue, sleep quality and quality of life among patients in the experimental group and those in the control group (F = 4.026, p= 0.049; F = 12.291, p= 0.001; F = 4.505, p= 0.038, respectively). The results indicate that acupressure improved fatigue, sleep quality and quality of life in hemodialysis patients. These results can be considered by nurse practitioners seeking alternative methods for the care of hemodialysis patients. |
