Levamisole, an anthelmintic agent, can be used in the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs). A 78-year-old woman suffered from RAUs for several weeks and sought medical care in the department of otolaryngology. The doctor prescribed levamisole to relieve her pain.
A rare prescription such as this off-label use can be discussed in the phar-macy department to reach a consensus. Pharmacists should confirm the actual usage with doctors and explain to patients that levamisole is not an anthelmintic to prevent panic attacks |
