Introduction: This paper reviews relevant costs and benefits from Sheffields hosting of the 1991 World Student Games (WSG). The intervening years allow a retrospective analysis to take place, particularly of the benefits realised by the WSG facilities, many of which are long term. These benefits include continuing economic impact from visitors to the city for events; additional major investments in sport and leisure consequent upon the WSG; the subjective wellbeing of 16,000 sports participants who regularly use WSG facilities; and the social benefits, particularly from health care savings, which sports participation in WSG facilities realise. Lessons from the Sheffield experience are identified, which may be relevant to future host cities such as Taipei in 2017. These lessons concern media management, planning, political leadership and an honesty about the primary purpose of hosting the WSG - not for the games themselves but for the longer term returns which can be achieved by WSG investments. |
