A magnitude 7.2 earthquake was occurred on April 3 in 2024. Books fallen and bookshelves overturned were happened in the library. The various damage rendered the library unusable for an extended period, requiring significant manpower and financial resources for repair and recovery. This paper details the structural forms and types of load-bearing racks (including bookshelves and CD racks) in the case library, and conducts an overturning analysis of the freestanding load-bearing racks on different floors. It also uses the estimated seismic response of each floor of the library to evaluate overturning behavior of racks in different floor, which are compared to the actual overturning damages to explore the applicability of the rigid body overturning assessment method. In order to effectively improve the seismic performance of the existing bookshelf in the library, this paper also refers to relevant literature to provide preliminary suggestions for seismic improvement strategies.
