Background: Patients underwent automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) mostly operate APD at night. When the APD machine’s alarm is noted during dialysis, the patients will call-in our duty nurses for help. In 2019, the number of on-call inquiries related to the alarm of APD machine was the most in our PD center. )
Purpose: (1) To improve patients’ ability to handle trouble shooting during APD. (2) To reduce the total number of on-call telephone inquiries related to the alarm of APD machines. )
Methods: Develop a standard training program, an alarm Q&A and alarm review handbook, design interactive software for contextual practice, and conduct alarm handling courses and operator awareness re-education. )
Results: The patient’s cognitive rating of APD increased from 69.9 to 86.9, and the total number of on-call telephone inquiries decreased by 46.7%. )
Conclusion: The implementation of the multi-teaching strategy improved the patient’s ability to handle alerts and the project had concrete results.
