The purpose of this paper is to discuss basic Japanese language teaching materials that enable professional engineer in Taiwan and Japan to learn the Japanese language appropriate for them while preserving their identity as engineers and researchers with advanced knowledge and skills. Based on learners’ notebook analysis and interview, the study examines teaching materials for basic Japanese conversation. Our results indicated that the possibility of developing teaching materials consisting of 1) Japanese language required in daily life and research situations, 2) laboratory-specific conversation topics and discourse, 3) understanding of the linguistic behavior patterns of native Japanese speakers, and 4) practical face-toface teaching materials. However, further studies are needed to confirm the significance of these findings.
