Taiwan had its proto-type English education started from scratch in the 1950s without any resources or technical know-how. However, it inherited the legacy of a large number of internationally recognized scholars who entitled the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship to study in the U.S. in the 1910s. Modernization of Taiwan starting from the 1970s has subsequently enabled the high-tech powerhouse to successfully reform its English education system. The paper depicts the evolution of Taiwan's English education in the past century, and attempts to propose some pragmatic views and best practices for rejuvenating the nationwide teaching and learning of English in the international context. |
