The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a public health conundrum worldwide. The resulting antibiotic resistance in bacteria causes limited treatment options for clinicians and has a significant impact on patient care and the financial costs to society. This mini-review contains a section on the history of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance in bacteria and the underlying mechanisms of this resistance and the current diagnostics for bacterial drug resistance in use in the clinical microbiology laboratory. |
