Given the dearth of fluent speakers of endangered languages and the need for intrinsic learning motivation, especially in the younger generation, innovative solutions are required to revitalize endangered languages. This study explored an integrated online collaboration model for revitalizing SaiSiyat, an endangered Indigenous language in Taiwan. The model included two main parts: building an online learning community to bridge rural and urban students and fulfilling a real task with instruction from language teachers. By integrating online and physical components, the actual task of the study was to design cultural activities for a summer camp. The intention was for the students to learn SaySiyat while planning the summer camp. After the summer camp, interviews were conducted to evaluate the participants’learning motivation and the language teachers’satisfaction regarding the experience. The results indicated that the proposed model provided new learning opportunities and motivated the participants to learn more about their culture. The online teaching strategy can solve the issue of SaiSiyat teachers' long commuting problem. However, recruiting and training qualified language teachers remain significant challenges. According to the findings, the paper discusses methods to improve the model by focusing on learning partnerships, families, language teachers, and the organization behind the operation. The integrated online collaboration model is feasible; however, a longitudinal study is required to evaluate the effect of the model on endangered language revitalization. |
