The authors report herein a case of an adolescent athlete who suffered an osteochondral fracture (OCF) in the weight-bearing portion of the lateral femoral condyle while playing basketball. Diagnosis of OCF was difficult, and was not reflected in the initial physical examination or on plain radiographs. However, secondary survey by computed tomography (CT) confirmed this rare osteochondral lesion in the weight-bearing portion of the lateral femoral condyle. Rather than performing open reduction and internal fixation, as has been reported previously, arthroscopic fragment excision and debridement were performed, and the patient recovered well without discomfort. Careful physical examination and history-taking with regards to the injury mechanism are necessary to exclude osteochondral lesions. |
