This article describes the author’s experience applying mindfulness in the care of a patient diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes complicated by cancer-related fatigue, during nursing care from February 7 to April 20, 2022. Using Roy’s adaptation model for a comprehensive assessment, the primary health concerns identified were cancer-related fatigue associated with the initial diagnosis and first chemotherapy, and emotional distress stemming from the diagnosis and ongoing treatment, which affected the patient’s work and personal life. To address these issues, the author developed a personalized care plan incorporating mindfulness practices. The patient was guided through mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) body scans to alleviate fatigue and engaged in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) to process emotions, enhance self-care, and improve emotional coping skills, thereby promoting a better quality of life. By sharing this nursing experience, the author aims to provide healthcare professionals with practical insights into integrating mindfulness therapies for patients facing cancer-related fatigue, supporting the development of sustainable self-care strategies, physical comfort, emotional well-being, and adaptive coping with life alongside cancer. |
