Technological progress has always influenced the way the world operates, affecting the forms of mobility, methods of information circulation, and the establishment of social relationships. From the perspective of artist residency, cross-domain connections, network establishment, and the diversity of residency units have significantly increased after globalization, even becoming a strategy in urban competition. Particularly, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, mandatory restrictions on physical mobility coupled with the demand for temporal and spatial transitions in artist residencies have prompted relevant institutions and professionals to actively examine the necessity and feasibility of shifting toward mobility. In the current era of globalization, discussions not only revolve around execution methods (how) but also delve into deeper explorations of meaning (why), aiming to prevent artist residencies from becoming mere tools and losing their impact and significance for artists, communities, and the arts ecosystem. Therefore, through a literature analysis, this study aimed to review the definitions and discussions of mobility in the specific field of artist residency by academia and practitioners since the era of globalization. This will be supplemented by case studies to observe the transformation of forms of temporal and spatial mobility and the reinterpretation of the meanings and demands related to artist residency behind this change. The connection between mobility and technological advancements is inseparable, with digital intervention forming a strong correlation with society’s overall network. This interdependence between technological development and contemporary society as well as the network establishes a symbiotic relationship, creating a transcendent meaning across eras. Through the analysis of relevant data, this study outlines the evolutionary process of mobility in the context of artist residency. Using globalization as a dividing point, it indicates that before globalization, artist residency focused on fixed body movement whereas after globalization, it was rooted in the foundation of bodily movement, expanding mobility to encompass the flow of capital, interpersonal connections, information, and resources. Using artist residency as a perspective, it constructs a space for contemplating mobility within a network society. |
