The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) coordinates an annual monitoring plan for pesticide residues in commercially available agricultural products. This plan is executed by local government health bureaus, which conduct sampling, inspections and trace the source of non-compliant cases. Through the collaborative efforts of central and local authorities, the monitoring results are completed and discussed in interdepartmental meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2023, a total of 4,731 samples were analyzed. The overall compliance rate of pesticides in all samples was 90.0%, in which the individual compliance rates in vegetables, fruits, and other samples were 88.3%, 93.9% and 88.6%, respectively. In the categories of product types, herbs and spices (78.7%), leaf vegetables with small leaves (82.2%), and peas and beans (83.6%) were observed lower compliance rate. Further analysis of the reasons for pesticide violation indicated that the top violations were“violating the scope of application of pesticides or using unapproved pesticides”. Source management is the first priority for food safety, while the sampling inspections of marketed products serves as terminal monitoring. TFDA and local government health bureaus will continue to collaborate, enhancing the sampling inspections of high-risk agricultural products, providing feedback to agricultural authorities and border control to strengthen source management. Thereby continuously to improve the compliance rate of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables. |
