The United States has set forth a risk-based, scientifically sound basis and substantial equivalence for the oversight of bioengineered food so that it had no legal or scientific basis to require mandatory labels for bioengineered food. However, in 2016, the Congress enacted the National Biotechnology Food Disclosure Standards, which preempts state and local labeling laws and responds to demands of consumers for the right to know and the right to choose. This article briefly describes the management framework of bioengineered foods in the United States, introduces the important contents of the National Biotechnology Food Disclosure Standards, discusses potential problems that may arise, and then offers suggestions for future management regulations in our country. |
