This paper attempts to use“text and image studies”as an observational perspective, focusing on the contemporary dissemination of Zhao Yun’s literary depiction. Zhao Yun’s age is not clearly defined in historical records. hereas in novels, there is a tendency to depict him as younger than Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. However, the plot element of“achieving remarkable feats at the age of seventy”in some cases result in the conclusion that Zhao Yun’s age in the novel is greater than that of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. It is observed that in the reception of literary and pictorial depictions, from the Ming and Qing dynasties onward, Zhao Yun has generally been portrayed as a“young general,”a characteristic representation that persists to this day. This paper also observed that an important qualitative change in the contemporary dissemination of Zhao Yun’s image that he is mostly transform from a rough and brave image to the portrayal of a handsome and refined youth. Furthermore, it reinforces the image of the“white robed general”and“silver spear and white horse”association. |
