It is widely known that among Kenji Miyazawa's siblings, his older sister, Toshiko, who passed away before him, played a crucial role as his confidant, and her death had an undeniable influence on Kenji's literary works. In his poetry alone, there are three famous poems that depict the scenes of Toshiko's last day, such as ''Silent Lament.'' There are also elegies that are profound and rich in layers, composed after months of deep mourning. ''Aomori Elegy'' is a representative masterpiece that offers insight into Kenji Miyazawa's literary method and his philosophical content. It is included in the poem section ''Lake Baikal Elegy'' in the book ''Spring and Asura'' and is the longest among all the elegies. First, I’ll identify the structure of the poem, shed light on specific terms, and then by asking crucial questions, acquire its hidden messages. Finally, I’ll rewrite“Aomori Eleg”in prose, which is more approachable, to present my interpretations of this poem. In this way, hopefully, we can get closer to the very essence of the author. |
