In tourism cities, tourists’emphasis on walking environment elements and environmental factors in walking behavior may differ from those of residents. However, the literature has not clarified the differences between the two heterogeneous groups and has often used objective environmental indexes that do not reflect walking experiences. To explore the heterogeneous groups’walking experiences and their associations with walking, this study took Gusu District, Suzhou, China, as the case, designed the respective measurements of“perceived environment walkability”evaluating residents’and tourists’walking experiences, and collected individual walking experiences and walking duration. Results indicated that the most critical factor in“perceived environment walkability”for residents was“infrastructure for walking,”whereas that for tourists was“aesthetics”;“access to services”and“land use diversity”could shorten tourists’walking duration, and“aesthetics”could extend it, but residents’walking duration was not influenced by“perceived environment walkability.”Finally, this study proposed walking experience improvement measures based on the importance and performance of walking environmental factors and proposed walking promotion strategies based on the factors’influences. |
