There is a local legend in Beipu Township:“When Beipu residents intend to get married, they have to build a bridge as a dowry, which symbolizes the highest level of wedding.”This legendary“dowry”refers to“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge.”This study conducted historical and spatial textual research to investigate historical literature. In this study we also conducted interviews with the elders, performed on-site inspections, and recorded relevant data. This study intended to develop a“historical model”centered on“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge”to have an in-depth understanding of the formation of“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge.”Based on the research results,“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge”represents the re-promotion of“Gim Gong Fug”reclamation, as well as the formation and smooth flow of“Camphor road”. This Bridge is an outcome of how the Jiang family managed their family business, as well as a representation of the marriage and career partnership between the Liang and Jiang families. Moreover, the Bridge was also a part of the local water conservation system. Nowadays, the water canal system co-constructed with the Bridge still plays its due role in the local life circle. Besides, the local residents and elders can always recall and talk about the impressive story of“Shuang-an Bridge”as a dowry, which has long been a shining example of“marriage ceremony”in everyone’s mind and has become an important component of local memory. As a result, from the perspective of“historical building”of cultural assets, this study finds that“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge”has a comprehensive value in the aspects of history, culture, locality and architectural or technology history. For the residents in Beipu and even the development history and regional culture of Hsinchu County,“Beipu Shuang-an Bridge”is a cultural asset of great importance. |
