Research on Li Yangbing's Xiao Zhuan Scholarships

李陽冰是唐代非常重要的篆學大家，曾刊定《說文解字》，對文字學的影響很大；他所寫的篆書也受到極大的推崇。世人認為他是李斯之後的第一人。學者因《說文》說「凝」是「冰」的俗體，認為李陽冰應讀為「李陽凝」本文論證此說實不可信。陽冰刊定說文，固然功不可沒，但學者也非議他臆測妄改之失，其中最重要的是徐鎧《說文解字繫傳》的〈袪妄篇〉，專門針對李陽冰提出批評，後代學者對李陽冰不以為然的也很多。本文論證，李氏的說法和寫法，不足為訓的固非無有，但可取者亦復不少，其中甚至有比《說文》的說解更合乎古文字的。李氏何以能有此獨見？他的根據是什麼？這是本文論證的重點。

Li Yangbing was a very important xiao zhuan (small seal style) scholarships expert in Tang Dynasty. He collated Shuo Wen Jie Zi and influenced the study of Chinese characters greatly. His xiao zhuan calligraphy also won high praise. Li Yangbing was regarded as the greatest xiao zhuan master after Li Si. Some scholars held that Li Yangbing's name should be pronounced as 'Li Yangning', because Shuo Wen Jie Zi said that 'bing' was the original character of 'ning'. But such idea is wrong and my paper will disprove it. Li Yang-bing collated Shuo Wen Jie Zi and made remarkable contributions, nonetheless scholars criticized his rootless guesswork and improper alterations. The most significant criticism came from Xu Kai's Shuo Wen Jie Zi Xi Zhuan, Qu Wang Pian. Afterwards, many scholars opposed Li Yangbing's conceptions. My paper will demonstrate that although many of Li 's conceptions and calligraphic writings might be wrong, but we could still find valuable ones. How did Li get such insights? What were his bases? These questions are the key points of my paper.
