This study aimed to apply design thinking to propose a process that could be adopted to develop art programs for older adult communities to promote creative aging. This action research employed the proposed process to develop a 4-week art program based on nostalgic topics and then implemented the program in two older adult communities in New Taipei and Taipei. Thirty-nine learners (20 in New Taipei and 19 in Taipei) aged 50-90 were recruited from the two older adult communities. A questionnaire and interviews were adopted to understand participants’ satisfaction with the program and to examine its impact on their lives. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The design process proposed by this study is suitable for developing creative-aging programs for older adult communities; (2) The participants experiencing high satisfaction with the art program related to the essential elements: inclusive teaching, self-expression, conjoint individual and group creations, and nostalgic themes; (3) The impact of the art program in improving the quality of life for older adults includes enriching life experience, fostering a positive attitude, enabling self-improvement, and facilitating social engagement. The findings support that the art program serves as an effective way for older adult communities to promote creative aging. This paper presents an action-research project that explored the development of an art program drawing on design thinking for older adult communities and gained empirical evidence and experiential knowledge through implementing the program in real settings. The methodology and findings can contribute to research and practice in creative aging and design for the real world. |
